Jose "Pete' Payan Obituary

Jose P. Payan Sr., lovingly known as “Pete,” passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 61 with his loving family by his side.

Pete was born on September 24, 1964, in Pecos, TX to Carmen Marquez Payan and Leonor L. (Tito) Payan Jr., whom he was a devoted son to.  He was a cherished brother to Rene Payan, Leonor (Lee) Payan II, Gabriel Payan, Lionel Payan, and Anthony Payan.

He was a proud and loving father to Pete Payan Jr., Jeremiah Portillo, Joseph Payan, and Kreselda Payan. Pete’s greatest joy in life was his family, especially his grandchildren—Maritza Payan, Marina Payan, Zachariah Thornburg, Zariah Thornburg, Nathaniel Portillo, and Aryanna Portillo—and his great-grandchild, Cestly Portillo, whom he adored dearly.

Pete dedicated many years of his life working as a welder, a profession he truly loved. He was known for his strong work ethic and took great pride in providing for his family. Outside of work, Pete enjoyed fishing, camping, and watching football—he was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan. More than anything, he loved being surrounded by his family and friends. His big, bright smile could light up any room, and his fun-loving spirit made him unforgettable to all who knew him.  Pete will be remembered for his warmth, his laughter, and the deep love he had for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmen Marquez Payan and Leonor L. “Tito” Payan Jr., and his son, Pete Payan Jr.

Friends and family will be received on Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Lewallen-Garcia-Pipkin Chapel.  Funeral Mass is set for Friday at 10:00 a.m. at San Miguel Arcangel Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Serenity Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be David Ross, Manuel Payan, Robert Payan, Lee Payan Jr., Noah Payan, Roy Ybarra, Jr.  Honorary pallbearers are Jose “Chepe” Zuniga and Addison Trujillo.

Pete’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
